The invention relates to a warfare agent detector for the detection of highly toxic chemical hazards or warfare agents present as gas or as vapor. In order to enable a rapid and uncomplicated detection of such substances at room temperature, the invention proposes to use a substrate with a hydrogen (H) -terminated or hydrogenated surface as a warfare agent detector. The substrate is provided with a measuring device for measuring shifts of surface charges at the hydrogen (H) -terminated or hydrogenated surface, respectively. The substrate consists of a semiconductor material or of a non-conductive material with an existing surface conductivity.
