The device (2) has a strap guide and a circular chain (14) for transporting retaining straps (4) of an article i.e. sausage, where the chain runs outside of the straps, and is driven by an engine. Strap attachments (18) are arranged at the chain and are pulled over retaining rods (20), where the attachments receive the retaining straps from the guide. The guide has a strap catcher, which receives the strap. A retaining unit (13) is connected with the catcher, where the rods are arranged at an extension of the unit.
