The method involves computing pairs of values (mfin, mfex) at a number of times consisting of a desired value (mfin) and an actual value (mfex) of the injected fuel quantity computed from other measurement parameters, computing a deviation value using the square error method and correcting the deviation based on the computed deviation value. A faulty injector is detected if a threshold value is crossed. An independent claim is also included for a device for correcting desired value deviations of fuel injected into an internal combustion engine.
