The differential gear, for a motor vehicle drive axle, has crown wheels as the half-axle wheels (12a,12b) and a spur gear with straight teeth meshing with them both as differential gear wheel (18). Each axle crown wheel is coupled to a friction brake (14a,14b), activated by axial spreading movements of the crown wheels. The differential gear wheel has at least two tooth meshing groups with different parameters.
