The method involves measuring a current (IS') flowing over an electrical on-load tap changer (12), and determining a step voltage (USt) between two adjacent transition contacts of the tap changer. A current flowing over the transition contacts is computed depending on the measured current and the determined step voltage. An actual burn-up of the transition contacts is computed depending on the current flowing over the transition contacts.
