The exhaust gas recirculation system has an exhaust gas recirculation path (56), a valve (52), an elastic component, an actuator (53) and a controller. The controller is provided for actuating the diagnostic mode, in order to switching in or switching off the actuator during the operation of the internal combustion engine and to monitor a resultant performance of the valve, in order to diagnose the elastic component.
