The method involves deactivating a part of the heat exchanger surface by an air-intercooler (11), where the air cooler has a heat exchanger surface and controlling units. The part of heat exchanger is deactivated if the soot particle filter are regenerated and the internal combustion engine is operated in the low partial-load operational range. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program (2) a controller and regulator (3) an air-intercooler.
