摘要

The first phase of this feasibility study has been directed towards a broad coverage of the subject, viz.n1. Current literature on mass exchange columns has been partially reviewed with particular reference to:na. Free rise or fall of liquid drops in water.nb. Flooding velocities in spray columns.nc. Heat transfer coefficients in spray columns.n2. Three potential heat exchange liquids have been selected for study and same preliminary tests completed.n3. Calculations have, been made to determine the approximate size of equipment required for a sea water distillation plant to produce 10,000,000 gallons/day. Briefly, we presently find that hydrocarbons of high molecular weight appear to be the most suitable heat-exchange medium and that from the data so far obtained, the calculated physical size of a 10,000,000 gallons/day plant is reasonable. Some new problems have been revealed but they are not in¬surmountable. In general, our progress is very encouraging.
