The method involves partially melting snow or ice from a roof (1) by heating using a heating device, and attaching the heating device to the roof. The heating device is formed and designed in such a manner that it is stationarily attached to the roof for a long term. Heating units (3 )are provided in a flat manner and are arranged above, in or below a roof membrane (2). A heating rod or heating wire is provided as the heating device along a plane of the roof. An independent claim is also included for a device for maintaining and freeing a roof of a building from snow or ice.
