The detector (1) has an inductive transducer (4) attached to an electric conductor (6) to be monitored in occurrence of a short-circuit current. An evaluating unit (8) detects short-circuit by detecting an inductive voltage in the transducer using the short-circuit current developed in the conductor. An adjusting unit adjusts the evaluating unit to a determined type-specific transducer signal characteristic from stored signal characteristics, where the adjusting unit is a testing device (14) for automatically detecting the transducer relative to specific signal characteristics. An independent claim is also included for a method for automatically detecting short-circuit in an electrical system.
