The local coil unit (1) has an evaluation unit determining the local alternating magnetic field depending on a local coil parameter set, where the local coil unit produces an output signal depending on the local alternating magnetic field. An identification circuit (8) identifies the local coil unit for a body region of a patient by the evaluation unit. The identification circuit includes a programmable memory (13) e.g. EPROM or electrically erasable programmable ROM (EEPROM), where the memory is integrated in a pin-and-socket connector (9). An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting local alternating magnetic fields with a local coil unit for a body region of a patient.
