The heat exchanger (1) is equipped with at least one device to convert liquid urea solution into gaseous ammonia. This is arranged in the inlet diffuser (5) and/or the outlet nozzle (6). Numerous variants and refinements of the design are described, including flow bypass arrangements. The conversion device comprises or includes fins, designed to improve heat transfer and located, at least sectionally, in the inlet and/or outlet (5, 6) sections. Unitary construction is employed in these sections. Flat tubes (8) extend between tube plates (7) in the body of the heat exchanger. An independent claim IS INCLUDED FOR the corresponding method.
