The exhaust gas heat exchanger (1) has an outer shell (2) and heat exchanger tubes (3), which are arranged in the outer shell in a bundle, where the exhaust gas (A) flows through the heat exchanger tubes. A diffuser is arranged on the inlet side or the outlet side of the shell. The diffuser is surrounded by a coolant pipe (12) on the outer side so that the diffuser is cooled by the coolant pipe. The exhaust gas heat exchanger is round or rectangular in shape in the cross section.
