The method involves providing an identification body (19) additional to a measurement object (17). A part of a holder (15) e.g. magazine, is scanned. A scanning signal is produced based on the scanning result, where the scanning signal corresponds to shape, an orientation of the identification body, of the holder, or a position with respect to the body of the holder. The signal and /or information obtained from the signal are used to identify the holder or the measurement object. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a system comprising holders for holding a measuring sensor (2) a coordinate measuring device comprising a control device.
