The system (1) has a monitoring line (12) fixed along an overhead wire (2) that serves for electrical supply of a railway vehicle. An evaluating device is coupled with the monitoring line. The monitoring line is mechanically coupled with the overhead wire in such a manner that the monitoring line breaks together with the overhead wire during breaking of the overhead wire. An evaluating device is formed and provided to determine the break of the monitoring line. The evaluating device has a transmitting device (11) and a receiving device (13) coupled with the monitoring line. An independent claim is also included for a method for monitoring an overhead wire using an overhead wire monitoring system.
