System for controlled inflation and venting of airbag which takes account of position and size of occupant and degree of impact

An improved system for inflating and venting of an airbag in a vehicle has at least two gas generators (2, 4) linked to two controlled vents (3, 5) and with a controller (1) and sensors for seat occupant position and size, as well as sensors for the severity of the collision. The vents and the second gas generator are operated in a timing program to provide the optimum support for the seat occupant, taking into account the position, or out of position, as well as the weight and the tension on the seat belt. Also monitored are vehicle retardation, temperature and other parameters.
