The system (10) has a wastegate valve (28) connected between an exhaust manifold (18) and a turbine section (22) of an internal combustion engine (14) e.g. diesel engine. Sensors (44, 50, 54, 60, 61) sense speed, boost pressure, rack position, barometric pressure, speed of a turbocharger (12) of the engine and respectively deliver speed, boost, position, barometric pressure and turbocharger speed signals. A controller (58) determines a control signal based on comparison of the turbocharger speed and a threshold value. A linear actuator (84) moves the valve to open or closed positions. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling turbocharger boost pressure of an internal combustion engine.
