The method involves changing a length of a tow rope (6) depending on traction of a towing vehicle (2). The tow rope is maximally extended upto a downtime of a drawn vehicle (3) during fall of traction of the towing vehicle. The extension of the tow rope is stopped during recovery of the traction of the towing vehicle. The tow rope reaching a target-spacing is obtained during recovery of the traction of the towing vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a device for performing a method for towing a vehicle with help of a drawing vehicle.
