Certain embodiments of the present invention provide systems and methods for refining the identification of candidates for clinical trials. In one embodiment, the method (1100) may include receiving (1110) a plurality of clinical conditions at a user interface. The conditions may generally be associated with coded terms in electronic medical records. The method may further comprise receiving (1120) parameters for accurately adjusting a search of electronic medical data for clinical conditions. For example, the parameters may weight the conditions and include a rank classification of the conditions, a determination of whether the conditions are mandatory for the pool, and a determination of a percentage deviation for numeric ranges. The method may further comprise executing (1130) an optimization function to create a pool according to the specified conditions and parameters. The method may further include a display (1140) of the pool in an order ranging from the most appropriate results to the least appropriate ones.
