The device has a blocking unit (12) e.g. valve, arranged in a discharge line (7) that is guided away from a cathode space (3) of a fuel cell, where the cathode space has a supply line for supplying of oxidation units. Another blocking unit (13) is arranged in the supply line. The blocking units are closed in the operating condition of the fuel cell system. The former blocking unit is arranged downstream to an expander (11) connected with the discharge line. The latter blocking unit is arranged downstream to a compressor (8) connected with the discharge line. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a fuel cell system.
