The method involves determining whether the driver depends on its driving position, and determining whether a parking brake is activated. A verification is made whether the function of the parking brake is affected at a time when the driver depends on its driving position. An acoustic signal and/or a display in a motor vehicle takes place during presence of the affected function of the parking brake. An independent claim is also included for a brake device for a motor vehicle.
