Producing a dispersant comprises copolymerizing a mixture of C1-4, C8-16 and C17-30 alkyl acrylates with an olefinic carboxylic acylating agent to give an acylated alkyl acrylate copolymer with a weight-average molecular weight of 5000-50000, and reacting this with a hydrocarbyl amine. Independent claims are also included for: (1) dispersant produced as above; (2) additive concentrate comprising 10-80 wt.% of the dispesant and 20-90 wt.% oil; (3) lubricating oil composition containing the dispersant (4) lubricating the gear unit of an internal combustion engine with a lubricating oil composition as above; (5) lubricating an internal combustion engine by introducing a lubricating oil composition as above into the crankcase of the engine.
