The method involves detecting parameters e.g. viscosity, of an engine oil, and continuously storing the parameters of the engine oil in a random manner in a motor vehicle. A temporal and/or driven distance-referred process of a sub-interval of one of the stored parameters is completed in the engine oil. A maintenance recommendation concerning the engine oil and/or a component of an internal combustion engine is generated based on the type and quantity of an identified foreign matter and/or the use of operating materials causal for a foreign matter insertion.
