The fuel cell has a pair of plates that are separated from one another, and a partition placed between the plates. A positive temperature coefficient (PTC) (20) structure is electrically connected between the plates. The structure is placed at a coolant outlet (14) in the cell. The structure limits the voltage generated by the cell, during the activation of the cell, until the cell achieves a normal operating temperature. A spring is placed in an opening between the structure and one of the plates.
