The method involves arranging electrically conductive intermediate layer (4) between varistor blocks (1, 2). One of the varistor blocks is connected with the electrically conductive intermediate layer by friction welding i.e. ultrasonic welding, at an edge region of a contact surface. Both varistor blocks are connected with the intermediate layer at the same time. The intermediate layer is applied on the varistor blocks before ultrasonic welding. An independent claim is also included for a surge arrester with varistor blocks.
