Zinc sulfide (I) whose white pigment properties are reduced or lacking is new. Independent claims are also included for: (1) producing (I) by mixing an aqueous solution of a sulfide compound with an aqueous solution of a zinc compound, adjusting the pH to 7 by adding more sulfide solution, and filtering, washing and drying the resulting zinc sulfide; (2) producing (I) by introducing hydrogen sulfide into an aqueous solution of a zinc compound to precipitate zinc sulfide, adjusting the pH to 7 by adding more hydrogen sulfide, and filtering, washing and drying the resulting zinc sulfide.
