The method involves operating a gas sensor (1) by a measuring gas, which is an air. The accuracy of the gas sensor is determined on the basis of the oxygen concentration in the air by a scanning element (2). The air is brought into a chamber (23) between the scanning element and a covering (3) during the operation of the gas sensor. The air is flown into the chamber and outside from the chamber.
