The system evaporator component (9) includes a water storage medium. This is mounted near a building surface (1) to be cooled. It is supplied with water. By evaporation of water from the water storage medium, the building surface is cooled. The water storage medium is an area-increasing layer forming an evaporation surface. It is covered by a structure which is brush-like, having capillaries (or a similar structure) at the evaporation surface. The water is stored in one or more of: a foam, pumice, lava or expanded fireclay. An independent claim IS INCLUDED FOR the corresponding method of cooling building surfaces.
