The transmission (14) has planetary gear sets (20,30,40,50) including sun gears (22,32,42,52), ring gears (24,34,44,54) and planet carrier assemblies (26,36,46,56). The ring gear (24) of set (20) is connected with planet carrier assembly (36) of set (30), while connecting planet carrier assembly (26) of set (20) with ring gear (34) of set (30). The clutches (80,82,84,86,88) establish eight forward and one reverse speed ratios between input arrangement (17) connected with engine (12) and output arrangement (19) connected with final drive mechanism (16).
