Device for removing oxygen whiskers (2) from steel workpieces such as slabs, ingots and billets comprises a whisker-removing roller (1), a whisker-removing roller segment on its horizontal axle journal, or a whisker-removing plate on its vertical axle journal (5) which can be rotated using an electromotor or hydraulic drive. The casing of the roller or roller segment coils partially or completely with a circulating knife (4). The knife interacts at an angle of 10-80 degrees to the whiskers.
