The operating mode of the scales can be changed from dynamic to static, in which a postal item is weighed while static on the scales. Changing between modes is effected automatically in that if the machine is operating automatically and weighing postal items dynamically it can be switched to static weighing if an upstream measurement station determines that the dimensions of a postal item exceed threshold values. The dimensions used to stop dynamic weighing and change to static weighing can be width, length or thickness, with the allowed values stored in controller non-volatile memory.
