The detector has a fixed sensor (2) placed with respect to a target forming ring (6), that is made of sheet iron. The ring carries an elasto-ferritic track (7) and is integrated to a crankshaft (1) of an internal combustion engine. The sensor provides an electrical signal representative of rotation speed of the crankshaft to a controller. Centering elements (13) e.g. wedge, center the ring on a bearing (4) of the crankshaft concentric to a trunnion (5) of the crankshaft. The centering elements are integrated to the ring and regularly spaced on the bearing of the crankshaft.
