REAL-TIME MONITORING METHOD OF CARDIAC STRUCTURES IN 3D ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY

A method for tracking the motion and shape variations of a deformable model in a sequence of volumetric images is provided. The method is useful for predicting the area of an area drawn from a 3D image, such as cardiac structures drawn from a 3D ultrasound image. The shape and position of a deformable model are predicted for each image of an ultrasound. An edge detection is then performed for each predicted point 34 on the deformable model perpendicular to the surface of the model. The distances between the predicted and measured contours for the deformable model are measurements for a Kalman filter. The measurements are coupled to noise values 42 which specify the spatial uncertainty of the edge detection. The measurement data is subsequently summed in the information space and combined with the prediction in the Kalman filter to estimate the position and strain for the deformable model. The deformable model is then updated to generate an updated surface model.
