The device has a clutch actuating device (1) with an outlet rod (6) displaced by a direct current motor (2). A master cylinder (7) generates a hydraulic pressure in response to the displacement of the rod. A slave cylinder (47) is connected to the master cylinder by a hydraulic circuit, and controls engagement and disengagement states of a single-disc friction clutch (40) in response to the pressure. An electronic control unit (60) detects a malfunction in the master/slave cylinder or the circuit based on determination whether a current value of the motor falls in a preset range.
