The method involves recommending a minimum engine speed based on a stored offset control authorization characteristic (CAR) e.g. mathematical function. A real angular offset is measured from measurement information (ANG1, ANG2) provided by angular position sensors (6, 7) on a cam shaft (2) and a crankshaft (4). A real value of an engine oil variable (VAR) e.g. engine oil temperature, is determined by a real value determining unit (11). The minimum engine speed is modified/stored for the real value to keep an offset quality criterion such as recommended minimum speed, on a real angular offset. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling an angular offset system of a cam shaft that activates valves of an internal combustion engine with respect to a crankshaft.
