The manufacturing method has a transition zone (4) between 2 different cam surfaces (1,2) of the cam, which are brought into the control position by axial displacement of the cam shaft, provided as a number of narrow strips (9), extending parallel to the end planes (5,6) of the cam surfaces. Each of the strips is rotated through a given angle relative to the preceding strip, the number of strips dependent on the required angular offset between the cam surfaces.
