The method involves disconnecting a secondary winding (120) of an ignition coil (100) from a spark plug. A primary winding (110) of the coil is supplied with electric current along a current circulation direction using electric wires (6, 7). The supply of the primary winding is blocked using a blocking unit when a current intensity value (I1) reaches a predetermined threshold value. The current crossing the primary winding along an inverse circulation direction is detected using a detection unit (40). A diagnosing result is displayed using a LED (42) based on the detection. An independent claim is also included for a device for diagnosing an operating state of an ignition coil of an internal combustion engine.
