Staphylococcus aureus protein 5G1 or 5H1 is used to assay biological samples in vitro for the presence of antibodies produced as a result of a Staphylococcus aureus or Staphylococcus epidermidis infection on implanted foreign material. Polypeptide (I) with SEQ ID NO:2 (defined sequence of 277 amino acids given in the specification) or SEQ ID NO:4 (defined sequence of 288 amino acids given in the specification) is used to assay biological samples in vitro for the presence of antibodies produced as a result of a Staphylococcus aureus or Staphylococcus epidermidis infection on implanted foreign material. Independent claims are also included for: (1) use of a polynucleotide (II) with SEQ ID NO:1 or SEQ ID NO:3 (defined sequences of 831 and 864 nucleotides given in the specification) for the above purpose; (2) use of (I)-specific antibodies to assay biological samples in vitro for the presence of antigens produced on implanted foreign material as a result of a Staphylococcus aureus or Staphylococcus epidermidis infection; (3) pharmaceutical composition, especially vaccine, comprising (I) or (II).
