Medium for extraction of carbon dioxide from a gaseous effluent, comprises a product of acid base reaction between a species (I), that is a base (mixture) of phosphzene compound and a species (II), a hydroxyl/thiol compound (mixture). Medium for extraction of carbon dioxide from a gaseous effluent, comprises a product of acid base reaction between a base (mixture) (I) of phosphzene compound of formula R1-(N=P(R3)(R4))x-R2 and a hydroxyl/thiol compound (mixture) (II) of formula R(ZH)n. Either R1, R2R5 or a covalent bond between P atom to N-atom in a cyclic structure; and R2-NR5R6; or R1 (or R2) : a chemical bond covalently linking N atom to R2 (respectively to R1); R5, R6cycloalkyl, heterocyclic, mono or polyaromatic (all optionally substituted) or alkyl; R3, R4R5, halo or -NR5R6; R : mono or multivalent aliphatic, alicyclic, optionally substituted heterocyclic or optionally substituted mono or polyaromatic; Z : O or S; x : 1-100, preferably 1-10; and n : 1-20, preferably 1-6. An independent claim is included for capturing carbon dioxide, comprising contacting gas effluent to be treated containing carbon dioxide with the extraction medium, to impoverish the effluent gas of carbon dioxide and to enrich the extraction medium in carbon dioxide and a regenerating the extraction medium and generating carbon dioxide rich gas.
