The device (2) has a magnetic core (10) presenting a magnetic loop of magnetic flux density according to magnetic field without hysteresis in working range. An electronic control unit (44) determines position of a movable part (4) with respect to the core from amplitude of magnetic field induced in the core, where the induced magnetic field is obtained from combination of magnetic field to be measured and excitation magnetic field. The loop is characterized such that an absolute value of derivative of magnetic flux density in relation to magnetic field is maximum for zero magnetic field. An independent claim is also included for a method for measuring the position of a movable part.
