The device (1) has an electric motor i.e. direct current motor, assisting a steering torque applied to a steering wheel (2). A speed reducing device is placed between the motor and a steering column (3) to transmit a torque from the motor to column. A torsion detection device detects direction of torsion generated in the column by rotation of the wheel. The motor, transmission and detection devices are housed in a casing. A controller controls the motor for generating a torque to assist a steering operation based on output signal of the detection device, and is housed in the casing.
