The method involves determining base parameter values and actual values of parameters relative to flight conditions of an aircraft e.g. multi-engine cargo aircraft, and generating a flight strategy e.g. long range cruise strategy, applied to the aircraft to rejoin a destination airport e.g. departure airport, during detection of an engine failure. Guiding setpoints e.g. speed, thrust and altitude setpoints, of the aircraft, are determined using the values and the strategy, to rejoin the airport, and transmitting the setpoints to a setpoint implementing system (13) during the failure detection. An independent claim is also included for an engine failure management assisting device comprising a determination unit.
