The method involves controlling an engine speed at an idling phase inlet, with a dynamic speed setpoint rule (CDBZ) between an initial engine speed and a final speed setpoint, using a regulator (REG). The rule is processed based on a Bezier curve using a calculation unit (MCBZ), where the curve is defined by control points. Temporal and speed parameters of respective the points are null. Another temporal parameter of one point is equal to desired duration for attaining the final speed setpoint. Another speed parameter of another point is equal to engine speed at the phase inlet. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling an internal combustion engine during an idling phase.
