Hydraulic fluid flowing through a hydraulic system is used to covey both hydraulic pressure and heat, the heat being removable from the hydraulic fluid via a hydro-thermal heat extractor (heat exchanger) (11, figure 2) and the fluid pressure being used to drive a turbine-generator (3, 5, figure 2). The hydraulic fluid may be circulated within the system by a pump 8 which is driven a second turbine 9 located in a flowing fluid, such as a river. The heat present in the hydraulic fluid also being extracted from the river.
