An apparatus that can recognise speech and spell a recognised spoken syllable, word, phrase or number through an audio input. The apparatus may be portable and may take the form of a writing implement such as a pen. The pen may be separable into a writing part and a spelling part. In one arrangement the apparatus comprises a speech input means, an audio output, a speech to code conversion means and a code to speech conversion means. The speech input means may be arranged to transform an input spoken syllable, word, phrase or number into an input signal. The speech to code conversion means can convert this input signal into a series of codes, wherein each code represents a letter or digit of the input syllable, word phrase or number. A code to speech conversion means uses this series of codes for separately and consecutively converting each of the codes of the series of codes into an output signal for output as a sound by the audio output. The component of the apparatus can be provided in a single device, such as a writing implement or may be distributed to reside on a number of devices.
