PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linguistic processor used in a handwritten character recognition system.;SOLUTION: The handwritten character recognition system includes the linguistic processor (266) which receives a sequential character array and generates an output string representing the most probable interpretation of the handwritten characters of a document. The linguistic processor is composed of a linguistic analyzer (274) for performing a linguistic analysis on character strings, and a lexical analyzer (290) for determining the most probable meaning of each character of each character string. The linguistic processor may be connected to the output of a low level recognition processor and generate the output string representing the most probable interpretation of the handwritten characters of the document.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
