PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical modulation device which is capable of enlarging a luminance dynamic range and the gradation number of a display image and improving image quality by modulating light from a light source in two steps via a first modulation element and a second modulation element, and is suitable for displaying an image while being matched with resolution of the second modulation element higher than that of the first modulation element.;SOLUTION: The projection display device 100 performs full-color display of an HDR image according to the resolution of the luminance modulation light valve by successively switching transmittance of each pixel in a color modulation light valve into transmittance according to three pixel data of HDR display data with a short time interval respectively and, on the other hand, setting only one pixel among three pixels in the luminance modulation light valve corresponding to the transmittance according to three pixel data of HDR display data, in accordance with (in synchronization with) the switching timing of the transmittance of the color modulation light valve, and performing processing of setting the remaining two pixels to non-transmittance (minimum transmittance).;COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
