PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve output control of pumps while reducing the number of sensors in a direct injection type fuel system having the two pumps. PSOLUTION: This pump control method includes: a process of operating a low pressure pump (72) in a first mode to adjust energy supplied to the low pressure pump (72) in accordance with change in output from a sensor (77) arranged on the downstream side of a high pressure pump (74) while the high pressure pump (74) is substantially halted in a first operating state of an internal combustion engine (10); and a process of operating the low pressure pump (72) in a second mode to change energy supplied to the low pressure pump (72) in accordance with change in the operating condition of the internal combustion engine (10) during operation of the high pressure pump (74) in a second operating state of the internal combustion engine (10).
