The process involves positioning a neodymium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (ND:YAG) laser generator that generates a laser beam, which is directed at programmed location of a hole (12) during hole installation. A pulsed laser beam at the programmed location of the hole is directed to remove some ceramic deposits (22) from the hole, while a deposit residual part remains surrounding the hole to define a surface opening. An independent claim is also included for a process of forming cooling holes.
