PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for functionalizing the surface of a metal oxide, by which a desired monomolecular film having a high regularity can be formed even for large sized molecules or biological molecules which are difficult to form respective monomolecular films in vacuum, and a targeted function can be imparted to the surface of the metal oxide in various fields; and to provide the metal oxide whose surface has been functionalized by the method.;SOLUTION: The method for functionalizing the surface of the metal oxide is characterized by cleaning the surface of the metal oxide in vacuum, then covering the surface with a monomolecular layer of an organic molecule which does not decompose even when it is exposed to atmospheric air, taking out the surface covered with the monomolecular layer to the the atmospheric air, and subjecting the surface to objective surface-functionalizing treatment.
